For example, New York defines adultery narrowly declaring an adulterer to be a person who "engages in sexual intercourse with another person at a time when [they have] a living spouse, or the other person has a living spouse." ^[3] While in North Carolina adultery is when any a man and woman who "lewdly and lasciviously associate, bed and cohabit together."^[4] Minnesota defines adultery conventionally: "when a married woman has sexual intercourse with a man other than her husband, whether married or not, both are guilty of adultery".^[5]

       Common synonyms for adultery are unfaithfulness, having an affair, or in American colloquial speech, cheating. It was also known in earlier times by the legalistic term "criminal conversation" (another term, "alienation of affection", is used when one spouse deserts the other for a third person). The term is not related to adult (Latin a-dolescere, to grow up, mature), but to Latin ad-ulterare (to corrupt).

       A marriage in which both spouses agree that it is acceptable for the husband or wife to have sexual relationships with other people other than their spouse is termed an open marriage. The resulting sexual relationships the husband or wife has with other people, though still legally considered adulterous, are not treated as such by the spouses.

Christianity

        Throughout the Old Testament, adultery is forbidden in the Ten Commandments, and punished by death. In the New Testament, Jesus took a softer stance on adultery, although he preached that it was a sin. In one story (John 8:1-11), some Pharisees brought Jesus a woman found committing adultery. After reminding Jesus that her punishment should be stoning, the Pharisees asked Jesus what should be done. Jesus responded, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Jesus then told the woman to stop committing adultery.

However, Jesus in some ways took a broader view of what constitutes adultery (Matthew 5:27-31), when he stated that even looking at a woman lustfully or remarriage of a divorcee counted as adultery, despite quite generous divorce provisions in Mosaic law.

BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.

Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified.

A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver’s death.

“The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest,” Hamil said.

Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin’s zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment.

‘Crikey!’
Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry “Crikey!” in his television program “Crocodile Hunter,” which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.

Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.

Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken.

Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.

Irwin told the Australian television program “A Current Affair” that “killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me.”

He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Oregon, and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

Illien, 57, has spoken fully for the first time about his ambition to launch a full two-bike MotoGP team in 2007, backed by an intended €20 million budget, to coincide with the start of the new era of 800cc engines.

"We will react faster and make decisions faster," he said. "We have to be able to compete for the world championship within three years. I am confident that we can do it."

Illien, whose Ilmor engines have won two Formula 1 titles with McLaren-Mercedes and 11 Indianapolis 500 races, was comparing his operation to the Japanese factories that dominate the MotoGP grid. He has a team of 12 people working on the MotoGP project in his factory at Brixworth, Northamptonshire, where the V4 engine is being built. The company employs 60 people at the plant, and a further 52 in the USA.

"We have done three track tests, and we’ve had an engine running on the dyno since April," he said. "We haven’t had a catastrophic failure yet, and one of the engines on the dyno has run for more than 13 hours."

Illien, who was born in Switzerland, said the team has now built seven engines and two complete motorcycles. The engines are four-valve, twin-cam designs with gear-driven camshafts, and the valves are pneumatically operated.

He confirmed that he is talking to grand prix veterans Alex Barros and Max Biaggi in the hope they can debut the bike at the Portuguese MotoGP on October 15 and in the final round of the season on October 29.

Eskil Suter, a former 250cc grand prix rider who has previously built chassis for Kawasaki’s MotoGP bikes, has designed a twin-spar aluminium frame for the project, and is convinced that the bike will be successful.

"The bike behaves as planned or even better," he said. "We’re very excited about how it works."

It’s no secret that series organisers Dorna would like to see British riders figuring more prominently in MotoGP, and what could be better for spectator and TV appeal than a top British rider on a home-built machine.

Candidates might include current BSB stars Leon Haslam and Shane Byrne, both of whom have grand prix experience, former WSBK champions James Toseland and Neil Hodgson, who wants to return from American Superbike duties with Ducati, and MotoGP veteran Jeremy McWilliams.

This is, however, entirely paddock conjecture at this moment and Illien has made no comment about British riders.
